Why Run if the Elected HISD School Board Has No Power?
Maria Benzon, an HISD parent and longtime educator, recently wrote: “I’ve been a teacher, assistant principal, professor, and education advocate for more than 25 years. I’ve spent my career helping kids access opportunity through education.”
She reminds us: “HISD’s elected school board may not have power, but it still has a voice.”
And why that voice matters: “I spoke because I believe that when you see something wrong, you say something. I spoke because silence felt like surrender.”

The elected board will be able to:
-
Amplify stakeholder voices to end the takeover—meeting with Miles, talking to parents, and raising the alarm in the media.
-
Prevent extremists, Miles’ supporters, or the easily misled from taking seats.
-
Be prepared to lead the moment local control is restored.
