Will you join the Feb 12th HISD Parent Sickout to oppose the harmful takeover?

It can feel like you’ve been speaking up forever, and it’s normal to wonder if anything changes. We are the leaders we have been looking for! Your voice matters a lot!

We are gaining momentum. More than twenty elected officials will be speaking at the HISD Board meeting on Thursday to stand up for the schools our children and teachers deserve. They will also ask HISD to take a stronger public stance in support of immigrant students and ensure we are all safe at school. Join them by registering by noon Wed.

Sign up for the Parent Sickout at houstoncvpe.org/sickout.
Join the Lantrip ES protest on Feb 12 from 7–8 a.m.

You can also speak at the HISD Board meeting on Thursday. Sign up by noon Wednesday.

Cheat sheet for agenda items:

  • Agenda item 1-24: Speak about the sickout or oppose the takeover.
  • Agenda item 2, 13-16:  SB 1882 charter partnerships at HSPVA, Energy, HAIS, and Challenge. Promised “autonomy” and “funding,” but as we’ve seen before, it’s all hat, no cattle.
  • Agenda item 22-23: HISD quietly changed its student code of conduct to make peaceful protest a Level 3 offense or higher. Schools may discipline students for missing class, but we need to remind HISD that they cannot impose harsher punishment because speech is political. See more at ACLU Know Your Student Rights

Our country has a long history of students engaging in protest in the service of justice, a tradition schools should honor and respect, as opposed to singling students out for harsh or disproportionate discipline.
