Speak out against any agenda item and the Miles takeover. It's clear that this takeover is harming our students and teachers, and Miles’ track record shows he can't be trusted with taxpayer money. He’s a snake oil salesman with empty promises.

Talk about Miles’ failed leadership, mismanagement, corruption, and the disastrous takeover. Talk about the harm to kindergarten kids (Monday’s email) or the $1M spent on adult-sized spin bikes-many still in their boxes- for elementary school students.

Here are talking points about the takeover and the bond. Selected agenda items are below.

  • Agenda item 1-Report from the Board Audit Committee: This is the same committee that met in secret in July 2024, ending 17 years of public meetings. Thanks to your outcry, they’ve reversed their decision. It’s ironic that the minutes are so vague—perhaps they want us to attend in person. Their next meeting is at 1 p.m. on Sept. 13—don’t miss it.

Agenda item 2 & 3- Board goal progress measures. As usual, Miles creates a hall of mirrors. He sets tiny targets of just 1% for this year and next, pushing the bigger goals far into the future so he can claim success. It’s like saying, "I jumped 3 inches this year compared to 2 inches last year, so I’m on track for the Olympic high jump team. These laughable goals are based on the Texas Education Agency’s flawed Lone Star Governance (LSG) model, which strips the board of authority and hands it to the superintendent. Who’s behind this disastrous model? A.J. Crabill, former TEA deputy commissioner now profiting as a consultant. Read more about Crabill’s troubling impact on our kids.

  • Agenda item 5- Approval of purchases over $1M: One of their first actions after the takeover was to increase the amount Miles can spend without board approval from $100K to $1 million. Now, they want to approve up to $2.5M for engineering surveys ahead of the bond election in November. If the bond passes, the money comes from it; if it fails, it comes from the general fund—funds meant for student learning, HVAC maintenance, custodians, wraparound specialists, or college access coordinators.
  • Agenda Item 12 seeks approval to waive the requirement for in-person homebound services for Special Ed students with severe physical or mental health conditions. Instead, the district proposes providing these services via “remote conferencing,” a term that lacks a clear definition and could even mean phone calls.
  • Closed session item:‼️Fiscal irresponsibility is on the consent agenda. Starting Friday Sept 13th, HISD can sell land and put the proceeds into the General Fund instead of the Capital Renovations Fund. The closed session includes an item to declare 0 Mesa Drive (next to North Forest HS) surplus property and sell it to the abutting property owner.
