The Texas Education Agency and Governor Abbott have taken over HISD by force!
TEA appointed superintendent F Mike Miles targeted 28 schools and expanded his horrible plan to almost ⅓ of the schools in HISD. They turned libraries in our communities into Zoom discipline centers. Teachers no longer have to be certified and are forced to teach a scripted test prep curriculum that is paced too fast, is not good for student learning and is all about STAAR prep. He has expanded his plan to non NES schools too.
We must continue the fight so we can lessen the negative impact on our students and schools and hasten the end of this illegitimate occupation.
The takeover of the largest school district in Texas is a politically motivated, irresponsible experiment that is worsening inequities and disenfranchising Houston voters. Takeovers have failed around the country and will cause skyrocketing teacher turnover, more school closures in Black and Brown neighborhoods, and profit-seeking charter expansion that purposefully under-enroll students with disabilities to inflate their accountability ratings.
A state takeover of HISD makes no sense. HISD had a B+ academic rating and a AAA-bond rating. The takeover is because of the STAAR performance of a single school in 2019.
