“The Texas chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) sent a letter to Houston ISD leaders urging them to "immediately rescind" punishments for dozens of students who protested at Northside High School last week.”

The Houston Press reports,"In this case, based on the currently available reporting, it appears that student protestors at some campuses were harshly punished while there is no indication that student protestors at other campuses were punished at all," said the February 10 ACLU letter sent to Superintendent Mike Miles and the Board of Managers members.

“According to the ACLU reading of HISD's discipline policy, nothing the students did at Northside merited their suspensions. Looking at each of the Level I through III offenses, the ACLU states that none of them call for suspension and to be a Level IV — most serious — offense would require repeated acts of disobedience or disorderly conduct.

“And finally, the ACLU argues, little is achieved and actual damage may be done by removing students from their classes and peers for three days. "Students should not face such severe consequences for peacefully protesting." Read the entire letter here.
