If you missed the second HISD Budget workshop yesterday, join CVPE on Saturday for an HISD budget workshop debrief.

LOCATION: Trinity Gardens Church of Christ, 7725 Sandra St 77016
TIME: 2:30-4:00 pm
RSVP here

AGENDA

  • Learn about the HISD budget from the Hon. Anne Sung. She will also be discussing the budget as it has been presented by HISD and the potentially harmful ramifications of HISD Administration's proposal to contract the reading and math curriculum from the state.
  • Discuss the intersection of mental health, COVID, and poverty with teacher Mary Hendricks.
  • Support students from North Early Challenge in their environmental justice campaign.
  • We will also be voting to endorse State Board of Education candidates.

We support small class size as a priority and increasing teacher/ staff pay to make HISD competitive with other local districts. There are only three places to pay for these things- cutting staff, closing schools, and cutting contracted services that have either outlived their usefulness or are improper uses of our taxpayer dollars.

We are concerned that the superintendent, based on repeated statements, is too focused on school closures (in the future) and cutting teacher numbers (increasing class size) as cost savings measures and is not speaking as publicly as he should about tightening the purse strings on the approximately $300 million in contracted services in the HISD budget.

See you Saturday for our in-person meeting!
