Public education was on the ballot yesterday. And we won!

Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard to elect Gina Hinojosa and Democrats up and down the ballot. This is a win for all children, teachers, and families. State takeovers harm and the end is in sight.
To the mother whose autistic children were scattered across three different elementary schools in the May Special Ed Shuffle of 5,000 students with disabilities, this win is for you.
To the hardworking teachers who were forced out by Mike Miles and the teachers who stayed in spite of him, this win is for you. Please come back.
To the parents who left the district because their kids were not allowed to read books in school or have libraries or teachers, this win is for you. Please come back.
To the taxpayer who watched a nearly half billion dollar reserve evaporate, we welcome a future where public education dollars are managed with care and benefit every HISD student.
We have spent years fighting against the state takeover and its harm to Houston schoolchildren. But we cannot afford to mistake this moment for permission to sit back and wait for change.
It will take a Marshall Plan of gargantuan proportions to rebuild our district better than before and ensure that every child has real books, learns well, and is recognized as deserving of the chance to achieve their dreams. It will take all of us working together to make this happen.
We must speak up, organize, ask difficult questions, challenge decisions that harm our schools, and insist that the voices of Houston families and teachers matter.
It is time for Mike Miles and the appointed board of managers to leave and make room for a new chapter to help our children.
The next chapter of HISD belongs to Houston. Houston’s children, families, educators, and communities deserve a school system that listens to them and is accountable to them. And we have a responsibility to help make that happen.
