The plan changes every day. Schools don’t have adequate space to accommodate social distancing. Yet they are required to accommodate everyone who chooses face to face.

Yesterday, HISD stated that it will reduce social distancing safety protections from 6 ft to 3 ft and raise class size limits to 20-25 students. This will apply in schools in which a large number of families choose face-to-face instruction.

Can you do two things right now to save lives?

  1. Email the HISD Board and the superintendent  that this plan will lead to more outbreaks. It is unacceptable to inform parents one day before the deadline that HISD is reducing social distancing precautions to just 3 ft spacing. We are the seventh largest school district in the country. We cannot afford to be reckless with people’s lives. HISD School Board and supe email addresses are at the bottom of this email
  2. Choose virtual if you are able. It will save lives.

Most parents aren’t yet aware that there could be 20-25 students in classes. Yet the deadline to choose virtual is tomorrow

The plan changes every day. Schools don’t have adequate space to accommodate social distancing. Yet they are required to accommodate everyone who chooses face to face. The virus is airborne; school windows don’t open; faculty and staff were promised n95 masks in the summer but won’t get them, and none of the other PPE ordered by the district will protect from aerosols. This is a recipe for widespread outbreaks.

If it is possible for you, CHOOSE VIRTUAL and tell your friends to do the same.

This is not just about one child or one family. It is about the health and safety of everyone in Houston. The link to the Parent Portal is here and the deadline is Sept. 25. You can also contact your school directly to tell them your choice. If you don’t submit your choice, your children will be sent to face-to-face instruction.

A teacher shared that each week of school so far, one of her students has lost a family member to COVID. The pandemic is real. We are still on Alert Red. We need to get this right.
