📢 Speak at the September 10 HISD Board meeting starting at 5 pm and counter Mike Miles’ false narrative with the facts and your firsthand experience. Here is the agenda packet and step-by-step instructions to register to speak. Get signed up for any agenda item 1-18 before Labor Day to honor workers.

It is shameful that Miles closed libraries and now wants to destroy a recently renovated Grimes Park to make room for the Southside Launchpad Career and Technology Center.

HISD said the project would be built on the site of the closed Grimes Elementary, not that it would destroy a newly renovated park. The school is on Jutland; the park is on Reed Road. Yet HISD used the school’s address throughout. Convenient or deliberately misleading?  

There are alternatives. Move the Career and Technology Center a mile away to the former Fairchild Elementary site or a mile in the other direction to Jones Future Academy, a 22-acre property with room to spare. 

The TEA conservator, Anastasia Lindo Anderson, has broad authority to intervene in HISD affairs. Just like the last conservator, Delores Delaney, who halted the superintendent search in 2018 even with an elected board, Anderson can intervene. 

Email [email protected]  and ask her to pause the project to reconsider the location. She earns $250/hour, plus $50/hour for travel. She should use her authority and substantial taxpayer funded pay to help protect Houston’s schoolchildren and their park.

Or speak up at the board meeting about Grimes Park or HISD’s disastrous new curriculum for students with disabilities.

One teacher shared that her cognitively disabled students are working on basic counting: What is 5? How much is 5? Yet HISD’s curriculum requires her to teach them square roots.

This isn’t just inappropriate. It’s setting students and teachers up to fail.
