Miles plans to move magnet and Career and Technology (CTE) programs from every high school within a 30-minute drive to Barbara Jordan CTE Center.

The Houston Press reported that “removing these programs undercuts the schools and means fewer offerings for students…critics also note the time spent bused to the CTE center, about 30 minutes each way.” That’s up to an hour of lost learning each day.

What began at three schools has now spread to nine. This isn’t about student access. Miles’ busing plan appears to be designed to inflate Barbara Jordan’s enrollment to justify CTE lease-revenue bonds approved in November, sidestepping voter approval.  Rather than fixing aging HVAC systems, Miles is inflating CTE center costs—now 40% higher than last year’s estimate—likely to funnel money into pet projects, like his news station, with little benefit for students.

If you missed our two earlier emails outlining the problems with this plan, you can find them here and here.

Show up to these sham meetings for our kids.

As we head into the new year, our wish for our schools remains simple: they should be academically strong and deeply human, where schools nurture curiosity and joy, not fear and compliance; success is more than a test score; and teachers are trusted, respected and given a real voice.
