[en español clic aquí]This week, Governor Abbott vetoed $60 million for a federal program helping low-income families buy summer groceries. Every Texan reports that “In the summer, the number of kids who have access to food benefits during the school year drops to 280,000 of the 3.5 million who are eligible.” If the governor excludes Summer EBT from the July special session, Texas kids in low-income families won’t get help until 2027.
Caution: Read Jim Schutze’s love letter to Mike Miles—“How Texas’ largest school district turned things around”—on an empty stomach. Access it via archive.ph if you don’t have a subscription.
Then send a letter to the editor and let this carpetbagger know the truth. Here is what one reader wrote:
“Schutze, a person with absolutely no background in the field of education, has spent many years defending the corporate education reform that is already the status quo in Dallas ISD. As he’s done in the past, Schutze ignores or misrepresents any arguments against these tactics.
But the fact is, gameable STAAR test scores are not a good measure of the quality of education our students are receiving.”
Join the fight to save our schools—and our democracy.
Join us this Saturday to block walk for public education! We’re raising awareness about fighting the harmful takeover and the importance of this year’s school board races.
The elected trustees may not have voting power yet, but they can still hold Miles accountable in other ways, meet with him directly, and use their platform to speak out in the media. That’s why these school board elections matter—and why your vote is a powerful tool in the fight for public education. Meet at 9 AM at Cariño Coffee (708 Hogan St.) RSVP at houstoncvpe.org/events.
