UNPRECEDENTED TEACHER AND PRINCIPAL TURNOVER

• Teacher turnover is almost 50% and 633 have already left as of January, harming low-income communities of color most
• 70 principals replaced since June and 120 put on notice, including some from the nation’s top schools
• Replacing HISD’s strongest principals and teachers with uncertified staff and teacher ‘apprentices’ without college degrees 

HARMING SCHOOLCHILDREN 

• Students are not allowed to read novels or books in NES schools; no functioning libraries or field trips
• Teaching reduced to only timed PowerPoints, worksheets, and frequent testing even for young children
• Teachers are not permitted to provide legally-mandated accommodations for Special Education and ESL students
• Massive cuts to programs for homeless, autistic, and dyslexic students; wraparound services no longer provided directly to students 

CULTURE OF FEAR AND DISTRUST

• HISD admin has limited students’ bathroom access, ignoring the advice of pediatricians

• Culture of retaliation towards principals and teachers, firing or reassigning dissenters
• Silencing critics, including students disciplined for speaking at a board meeting

UNACCOUNTABLE TO PARENTS AND TAXPAYERS 

• 70-90% of parents surveyed oppose NES “reforms”
• Reckless spending amid declining enrollment and reduced oversight 
• No democratically elected school board and no pathway back to local control
• Miles has proven track record of misusing federal funds
