Parent Kelly Blikre said, “We’re participating in the sickout because this administration treats schools like assembly lines, prioritizing AI curriculum and bureaucracy over meeting the real needs of our students. We still don’t have an elected school board to hold accountable, and we know change only comes when parents, teachers, and the community stand up and say, ‘These are our schools, and we’re not going away.’

We’ve always avoided missing school, especially with Texas’s attendance-based funding. But these are different times.”

HISD Parent Briana Mohan said she is frustrated by the lack of action to protect students from potential ICE raids and stated, “Schools should be safe spaces for students to learn, not hunting grounds for ICE. Mike Miles is not sending a strong enough message of support to immigrant students and needs to take a stronger stand.”

Melissa Yarborough, a teacher who taught in HISD last year who has children in the district added, "What Mike Miles is doing is fake and performative. He’s all about manipulating test scores, not about real, student-centered learning. For one day, I say, ‘No,’ to him for the sake of my child."

Will you join us? Can you spread the word?
