The State Board of Education (SBOE) approves curriculum, adopts textbooks, establishes graduation requirements, approves rules for teacher certification, and has final approval of new charter schools. And as we saw on September 2nd, the Tx SBOE voted to delay the review of reasonable Social Studies TEKS curriculum standards until as late as 2025 under pressure from far-right astroturf organizations like Moms for Liberty. Truly, we must be more involved in down-ballot races like the SBOE or we may lose our democracy.

Since the board is projected to be much more conservative next year, they may push even more forcefully for censorship of the full truthful history from Texas curricula, for book banning and for even more charter expansion. On Saturday, the SBOE panel will include Michelle Palmer (D6, North, Central and West Houston), Staci Childs (D4, South, East, NE Houston), and Dan Hochman (D7, Galveston, Ft Bend, Brazoria, Friendswood, and Jefferson County). Hochman's Republican opponent participated in the January 6 insurrection and Palmer's opponent is an incumbent who supported more censorship in our schools. Let's make sure every vote counts!

Join us Saturday at 1:30 pm. RSVP for zoom link at houstoncvpe.org/events. If you can't come, will you fill out this survey to stand up for public ed?
