Mike Miles’ draconian policies, sky-high teacher turnover, and attacks on teachers and parents are destroying our schools. It’s time for him to go.

Houston ISD families are participating in the sickout because Mike Miles’ takeover and his “New Education System” are harmful, unsustainable, and erode community trust. Community Voices for Public Education stands with families from all parts of Houston and all walks of life who believe in strong, equitable public schools.

Families and educators know firsthand how this takeover is hurting our kids. Miles’ so-called "historic gains" are a lie. He’s blocked 70% of NES 9th graders from taking biology to artificially raise STAAR scores and kept high-achieving NES 8th graders out of Algebra putting them in more remedial 8th grade math to boost 8th grade STAAR scores, worsening inequalities.

Our schools deserve leaders who collaborate with the community—not ones who silence the voices of those who matter most: our children, their families, and our educators.

Miles needs to work with, not against, teachers and families. His weak response on immigrant safety last week did not reassure families that HISD schools are safe. We demand a stronger statement ensuring our schools are safe spaces, not hunting grounds for ICE.

The unresponsive board of managers and Mike Miles are failing our community. We need the return of an elected board, real learning, full books, and policies that support both teachers and students.
