HISD will be cutting close to 170 of the 280+ wraparound service specialists, almost 50 of the 84 college advisors, and all seven of Houston ISD’s Special Education social workers.
The wraparound service specialists were told on Thursday that they won’t have a job next year. You can read more here and here. HISD college advisors and Special Education social workers were also told this past week. “Due to the high number of students in HISD who navigate outside-of-school challenges, the district has staffed schools with “wraparound resource specialists” to help them access clothes, food, mental health services and more. The program began in 2017-18 with 40 staff, and since has grown to more than 280, according to district payroll records.” Texas leads the nation in number of children kicked off Medicaid. Twenty percent of Texas children live under the poverty line. According to Every Texan, most children living in poverty were Hispanic children (66.3%) and Black children (16.1%). |
