LIE: Last week, Miles said that principals were begging to be added as NES-aligned schools.

FACT: Miles is pressuring principals in Black and Brown neighborhoods to make their schools become “NES-aligned.” Now principals are forcing their faculties and school-based decision-making committees (SDMCs) to support this move with false information that teachers will get huge stipends for working at an NES-aligned school.

Teachers and parents need to know the truth. Teachers at NES-aligned schools will NOT get extra stipends. What NES-aligned schools will get is boring, scripted curriculum (Eureka, Amplify, and Carnegie) and less time for recess, music, art, and PE. “Problem” children will be sent to a Zoom room.

He will require teachers to implement TEA’s scripted curricula with such rigid lockstep fidelity that kids will begin to hate themselves

When asked about Miles’ plans, Ruth Kravetz told the Houston Chronicle, "What does that tell us about hyper accountability? That using test scores to evaluate teachers, students, and schools has not improved the conditions of students in those schools, and now we're going to take something that has been done to a great extent at HISD and do it in triple time."

Our schools need real change but not this. Our children need-

  • Small class size, meaningful learning, and less endless STAAR prep
  • Wraparound services that support our kids in school and life
  • Fair housing, clean drinking water, family-sustaining wages, and no food deserts
  • Music, arts, electives, and fun learning like in affluent schools
  • Fairly paid and respected teachers whose input is valued

If you are on an SDMC or a faculty member, be strong. Do not cave like the principals at Whittier, Gallegos, and RP Harris did this week. Our schools need real change, not this. HISD’s memo (see below for jpg) says the deadline is Thursday to choose to align.
