At Pershing Middle School yesterday, the interim principal and four assistant principals were reassigned. Miles is also moving principals around at Lanier and River Oaks Elementary to further disrupt student learning.
At Harvard Elementary School yesterday, the magnet coordinator and assistant principal were escorted out of the building by HISD executive directors.
This “community-busting” tactic aims to destabilize schools and weaken community voices, but we’re united and pushing back.
Miles has been using community busting as a tool to harm our students since the takeover began. He was similarly disruptive at the 28 original NES schools last year. At Pugh Elementary School, the students started school in August 2023 with only six of the 28 teachers from the year before. More recently, Miles reassigned the entire fourth-grade team at Atherton Elementary School in Fifth Ward the weekend before school started and reassigned their principal and assistant principal last month.
It will take a united effort to save our schools. At the most basic level, push back against community busting this way. Parents and teachers can get each other’s contact information. Parents and teachers can meet each other at house meetings off campus in safe places. Talk to the press. Do not let this happen under cover of darkness. What happens to any school can happen to every school.
Join us: Speak at the Nov. 14th HISD board meeting and join the Nov. 16th CVPE meeting.
Together, we can replace Miles, get a better bond, and end the takeover. |
