In the last two weeks, Mike Miles has directed the district to move forward with firing teachers for “excessive absences.” In practice, that has meant nonrenewing teachers who used just one day beyond the allocated 10 to 15 sick days per year even if they have additional carry-over sick days.
One was caring for a parent with cancer. Another had exhausted maternity leave while tending to a sick newborn. Another was on approved FMLA after tumor surgery.
One teacher administered CPR to her mother before she died. She then used four days to bury her. That
One day beyond what was authorized. Besides the serious legal and moral concerns, this is just wrong.

No one should be alone.
