And now, HISD is moving toward another untested experiment.
Mike Miles has announced he will pilot the Alpha School AI model at Clemente Martinez and Gregg Elementary Schools, two of HISD's nine new Future 2 schools. That's despite previously saying Future 2 schools would not be modeled after Alpha Schools.
A Brownsville parent whose daughter attended an Alpha School raised concerns after discovering that her daughter's school computer was recording her while she worked on assignments at home.
"The previous year, the school recorded students' screens to monitor mouse movement and app usage. This year, they went a step further and required access to students' cameras for 'more accurate data.' At the start of the year, we were asked to grant permission for our children to be recorded. It was mandatory during school hours but optional at home. ... Later, I realized my daughter's camera was still recording while she worked at home. My daughter had no idea she was being recorded, and honestly, I have no clue what was captured, but she spent a lot of time working from home."
