Can you stand up for kids on Wednesday at the Pershing protest? Superintendent Mike Miles replaced the principal, the interim principal and all four assistant principals in the last month, switching them with assistant principals at other schools.

Did you know HISD has scheduled December's monthly board meeting for Tuesday, December 10? According to board members including those in office in the 1990s, this change is unprecedented. When we contacted Board Services, we were told the meeting was moved “by special request per BE(LOCAL) policy.”

It raises the question: Is the real intent to limit public comment?

If you'd like to speak, you must sign up between Saturday at 5 pm and noon on Monday, December 9. RSVP here for a Sunday Zoom meeting at 7pm for help registering to speak. The meeting starts at 5 p.m. on December 10.

The Pershing Middle School community is protesting against the disruptive policies of HISD Superintendent Mike Miles and the Board of Managers. Parents, students, and guardians are demanding support for teachers, stability in staffing, an emphasis on social-emotional learning (SEL), and an end to punitive measures harming the school community.

Pershing has endured six leadership changes in a year, abrupt removal of four assistant principals, and beloved teachers resigning or being placed on leave, creating chaos. Students report stressful conditions, including limited bathroom access, rushed transitions, and insufficient breaks, with one student describing school as feeling “like a prison.” Teachers face constant curriculum changes, intimidation, and fear of speaking out.

“No program can thrive amidst this instability,” said parent Amber Griffiths, calling HISD’s approach unsustainable. Jessica Evans added, “Student mental health and belonging matter as much as test scores.”

Protest Details:
The community will peacefully protest across from Pershing Middle School, 3838 Blue Bonnet Dr on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, from 7:45 - 8:15 a.m. Attendees are asked to respect students and teachers arriving during the event.

The community demands stability, teacher support, investment in SEL, transparency, and collaboration on future changes at Pershing and across Houston ISD.

"There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children." Ironically, Miles recently cited this Nelson Mandela quote without self-reflection. It's time to return it to the people.
