Can You Act Before It's Too Late?

The Legislature’s current voucher proposals put a handful of private contractors in the driver’s seat. Other states have already seen problems.” Read the full story in The Texas Observer here.

Now is the time for Texas House members to hear from voters in their districts. With the voucher bill fast-tracked by Abbott and Patrick, the public education committee will hold a hearing on vouchers this Tuesday at 8:00 AM, and the vote on the House floor is coming up soon. We need your help to protect local public schools!

Can you act now before it is too late?

  1. Call and email your House member:
Your call can be short. “I am ___ and I am a voter in your district. I urge you to vote no on vouchers in any form, including Education Savings Accounts (ESA) in HB 3.” If your state rep already opposes vouchers, thank them and let them know you support their stance.
  2. Forward this email to family, neighbors, and public education advocates across Texas. Encourage them to contact their reps—messages from rural and suburban constituents are especially impactful! We should call our aunt or son’s rep as often as our own!
  3. SUBMIT public comment here:. You must submit your public comment before Tuesday’s HB 3 public ed committee hearing adjourns. Watch live here

Vouchers defund public schools, harm student learning, and discriminate against vulnerable kids

  • Vouchers subsidize private school tuition for the wealthy; 70% of voucher recipients nationally were already in private schools
  • Vouchers Come in Way Over Budget. Arizona’s voucher scheme costs 1400% higher than advocates promised
  • Vouchers have caused the largest academic declines ever recorded, surpassing learning loss from Hurricane Katrina and the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Many voucher-funded schools discriminate against LGBTQ+ students or those with special needs.

The Voucher Program Proposed in the Texas House  (HB 3)

  • Teacher retirement funding at risk
  • $80 million new state bureaucracy to administer the ESA program
  • Private schools receive tax dollars without accountability

We’re at a critical moment to protect our schools—it’s up to us!
