Mike Miles is making the podcast rounds this summer, claiming credit for what he calls the transformation of HISD. He points to rising scores as proof of success and claims they are the result of ending a culture of low expectations. 

We know better. Miles has manipulated who gets tested to inflate ratings. Our kids are not data points and our schools are more than ratings.

[en español clic aquí] In the last two weeks, Mike Miles has directed the district to move forward with firing teachers for “excessive absences.” In practice, that has meant nonrenewing teachers who used just one day beyond the allocated 10 to 15 sick days per year even if they have additional carry-over sick days. [en español clic aquí] This month, HISD Leadership reportedly told schools to turn away students enrolling for the remainder of the school year. This is against state law and violates federal protections if any of the affected students are homeless.  Education is a right for students between the ages of 5 and 21 in Texas.  Read more
